Every day is special

How to make your day special

As New Year’s Eve just passed, I wonder why we don’t do it more often: Celebrate! Life is to precious to only focus on the big celebrations. We should make every day special.

In October, I got a call. “Agni, I need you to sit down!” Our mother had been hospitalised for an emergency bypass surgery. While the shock has passed and she’s adjusting just fine, she’s still saving food, clothes and china for special occasions. Every day, she eats one York Peppermint Patty as a treat.

Remove guilt and other limiting beliefs

We get hit by illness, redundancy and other bad news. Or we don’t find ourselves deserving this special treat. We’re working hard so our kids/we will have a better life later on. This should be saved for a special occasion!

I bet you’ve heard such comments before. Or are you even saying them to yourself? Stop!

You’re alive and that’s a pretty special occasion!

No need to splurge

Now, before you open that bottle of Moet and treat yourself to some caviar snack, let me be clear. I’m not giving you a free spending pass. You don’t need to splurge and go into debt to enjoy life. No, no, no! You can make your life special without spending money.

Carpe Diem

The movie “Dead Poets Society” first introduced me to the concept of Carpe Diem (seize the day). As Professor Keating introduces his students to living extraordinary lives, it reminds us all. Every day is special. If you’ve never watched it, here’s the clip.

What do you want to do today? Unfortunately, not everyone has the luxury to simply ask themselves this question. And yet, we all have. While we may need to go to work, care for children or a relative or be responsible for our actions, we can still decide what we want to do each day. Fall into your bed knowing you’ve done what you wanted.

Be intentional

This leads you to be coming more intentional about your day. By deciding what you want, you can have your very own mantra. You prepare your behaviours and emotions for that day.

Mind is everything special day

If you’re meeting an important client, you may wish to be appear knowledgeable, confident and assertive. Going to catch up with a friend you haven’t seen in a while? You may choose to be fully present, actively listen and put your phone away when you’ll meet.

Fill your day with what matters

At the same time, you may re-prioritise and make time for who and what matters to you.

If spending time with your family makes your day special, you may build it into your daily routine. Taking pictures of your kids laughing and you’re capturing that special moment forever.

Wanting to explore more of the world? Why not also check out your city? Take a friend or relative along as you visit the latest gallery or attend a theatre play. Don’t wait for Christmas to catch up.

Just do it

Make every day special now.

So, pour yourself that coffee you got for your birthday, book those concert tickets for you and your friend, gather your family for a picknick in the park, wear that special dress, enrol in the language course, buy yourself that bouquet of flowers.

Tell us how you’re making your life special. Share a picture or leave a comment. Can’t wait to find out!

Until next time,
Agni
