5 Tips for easy home organisation

Make a start to create your dream home

Talking to a colleague this afternoon, we both wished we were at home, wrapped up in a blanket with a hot drink, reading a book. The weather is just not inviting us to spend more time outside. So why not make use of these cooler temperatures (yes, 20 C/68 F are cool) and organise your home?

Night table

Bedrooms are meant for 2 things only and acting as your living room is not one of them. So why do you keep so much on top of and inside your night table? Limit the top to maybe one book you’re currently reading, an alarm clock and, if you need, a glass case. The drawers should only hold what you need during the night or early in the morning, e.g. medication or a journal and a pen.

Improve the quality of your sleep by making it mobile phone free. No temptation to check work emails or social media while you’re supposed to sleep and re-energise.

Pots and pans

Do you stack your pots and pans on top of each other? Looking for one stuck at the bottom, trying to get it out without pulling out the other pots? Stack them side wise instead and you can easily pull the pot or pan out. Do you have more wall space that you want to use in a new way? Put up a peg board where you can hang your pots and pans.

Bedding

Do you dread opening the door to your linen cupboard? Which sheets, covers and pillow cases do you actually use? Are there any ones which are so used, they can be thrown out? Fold the remaining sheets and covers and stick them in a pillow case. You have an entire set and next time you need to change the bedding, everything is available in one go. No more looking for the missing pillow case.

Herbs and spices

Herbs and spice are best when fresh and chefs recommend you buy them when you need them. Unfortunately, that’s not an option for most of us and we often overstock on herbs and spices. Remember that fancy dinner you made last year? Never used those spices again. We’ve all been there. Check the expiry dates of your herbs and spices and toss the ones that have extended their welcome. Store them on a lazy susan or on a multiple height rack to see all of them quickly.

Entrance hall

Besides your shoes and jackets, what’s all in your entrance hall? Keys for the car and the house? A bike, push chair, toys, umbrellas, sunglasses, pictures, chargers, landline phone, more shoes, golf bag, shopping bags, mail, bottles of water? New plants, gift for tonight’s birthday party, another sports bag, dog food? Put all items which don’t belong in the entrance hall where their real and permanent home is. Take the dog food into the storage room, the plants into the garden, the bike into the garage and so on. Create a designated space for all keys and you no longer hear “Honey, where are my keys?” What a relief!
