Look after yourself

It’s amazing how quickly time flies. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m getting older, if time has a different speed in this region or what it is. This week was a really good one, very productive and energising. Despite it being such a positive one, I need to look after myself. This made me think about you. How do you look after yourself?

We’ve collected 30 simple and cheap ways to look after yourself:

  1. Turn your phone, email and other notifications off. Don’t forget to switch off the doorbell.
  2. Read an article or a book. Jump into a different world for a while or learn something new.
  3. Treat yourself to a hot drink. Enjoy every sip of that cup of coffee, tea or cocoa.
  4. Soak in a hot bath. Close the door and forget the outer world.
  5. Have a facial. You can easily apply a mask at home and don’t need to go to a salon.
  6. Paint your nails. Applying nail polish is a quick and simple way of also changing your outfit and experimenting with colour.
  7. Listen to some music. Sing along!
  8. Watch your favourite movie. Popcorn with it? Go for it!
  9. Call a friend. Catch up on what’s happening in their live.
  10. Clear a drawer. Decluttering creates space and lifts weight of your shoulders.
  11. Do some jumping jacks. They are an instant feel good!
  12. Create a collage with your pictures. Tools like Canva can help you.
  13. Meditate.
  14. Write a letter to a family member or friend.
  15. Walk in the park and smell the flowers.
  16. Play with your children. See their happy faces.
  17. Get your brushes out and paint a picture.
  18. Soak up the sun. Get some vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin.
  19. Go to the gym or pool. Exercise those muscles.
  20. Light up a candle.
  21. Watch a comedy and exercise your laughing muscles.
  22. Stroke a pet. Borrow your neighbour’s dog, cat, rabbit and feel that furry coat.
  23. Take a (short) nap. Get some sleep.
  24. Hug someone or give yourself a hug. Get some oxytocin.
  25. Play your instrument.
  26. Treat yourself to a bouquet of flowers.
  27. Get a massage. Give your body a break, too.
  28. Do something you always wanted to do.
  29. Slow down and observe what’s happening in the moment.
  30. Ask for help. We all need a little helping hand every so often.

Do you even have any time for yourself? It’s vital that you look after yourself. If your energy levels are depleted, how can you fulfil your other roles, like being an employee, a friend, a romantic partner or a parent?

A number of my friends have realised how essential it is for them to do something for themselves. One is booking herself on a treat once a year while another one decided to turned her hobby into a business and is glowing looking after this baby.
