Clean your fridge (2017)

What’s alive in your fridge?

It’s August 2017 and we’re working with a client who’s tired of wasting food. All too often, it’s forgotten in their fridge. Whether it was too much take away or some foods that just seem to disappear until they’ve expired, my client wanted to change this. So we started at looking at their behaviour and noticed, their fridge has never been cleaned. Does that sound familiar?

In case you’ve missed our 2016 post, here are our top 6 tips for a clean fridge:

1. Remove everything from your fridge. Put all the food on your kitchen counter, on a table or better in a cooler. Also remove the shelves and door insets.

2. Clean the shelves and door insets with hot water with some washing up liquid or baking soda. If you have any sticky spills, let the shelves and insets soak in the sink first. It makes cleaning so much easier.

3. Clean the inside walls. Use warm water, dampen a cloth and add some washing up liquid. Wipe along all indoor walls.

4. Don’t forget to clean the outside. The door handle of your fridge is used how many times by how many people in your home? Yup, that’s why you want to clean it!

5. Check the expiry date for all items you’re putting back. Throw out anything expired or mouldy. If you know no one in your home will eat it, do you want to keep it?

6. Store food at its appropriate level. Keep fresh produce at the bottom of the fridge, where the air is cooler. This chart will help you.

Cleaning your fridge may take 15 to 20 minutes only. Cleaning your fridge not only ensures you keep only food still safe to eat for you and family. Did you know that a clean fridge also helps keeping your food fresh for longer and reduces your wastage?

So what are you waiting for? Enlist your family and spend these 15-20 minutes cleaning your fridge this weekend. It’s the first step to knowing what’s in your fridge and preventing food wastage in the future!

Until next time,
Agni
