Back to school

Top 10 tips to get back into the school routine

Can you believe it? It’s only early August and my friend and I are talking how the little loved ones need to back to school. Soon! Enough of summer, taking them to see their grandparents, picking them up from summer camp and eating plenty of ice cream. Their little brains need to be filled with learning and that won’t come from me alone. It’s time to go back to school!

It’s easy to stay up a bit later and sleeping a bit longer. But you don’t need to be taunted by even thinking of the transition the other way around and getting back into the school routine. Here are my top 10 tips to get back to school without any anxiety.

  1. By now, your school has probably given you a checklist for their required supplies and books. Check what you have at home (you don’t need to buy a calculator every year!) before heading to the stationary shop. If you need to buy any books, are they readily available at the school’s bookshop or do you need to order them?
  2. Need to wear a uniform? Can you still use the one from last year or will you need to buy a larger size? If you’re going to buy a new set, how many tops do you require? Thinking about how often you want to do laundry and how many you can afford (as great as they are, they’re not cheap). It may need to be balancing act.
  3. Get a haircut 1-2 weeks before school is back in session. It reduces the last minute rush!
  4. Learn the new bus schedule and find out where your kid will be picked up in the morning and dropped off in the afternoon.
  5. Find out from the school what’s required to sign up for after school care and for your child to participate in extra-curricular activities. Will these interfere with the bus schedule on specific days? If so, what alternative transportation (e.g. car pool, private taxi) can you use?
  6. Set up a study area at home. If you have moved over the summer or it’s the first time for your kid to come home with assignments, create a dedicated study area. This can be the kitchen table or a desk in their bedroom. It needs to be well lid and quiet for them to focus.
  7. Don’t miss any document submission deadlines or payment due dates. Note these days in your calendar and set yourself 2 reminders. Nobody wants to pay an extra fee for late payments.
  8. Verify your emergency contact details. At the same time, check if your child’s medical information is still accurate. Do any vaccinations need to be refreshed? Are there any vaccinations which the school requires but are not mandated by your government? If they have become allergic, do you need to train the teachers and school personnel?
  9. Attending a new school? The school may be organising an orientation day. Block your calendar and discover the new school with your child.
  10. Start the going back to school routine a few days before the actual school start. This means going to bed earlier and getting up earlier too. You can start by changing their bed times by a few minutes every day.

These are my favourite tips and they’ve helped to get back into the swing of the school routine. What do you want to do with your little ones before they’re back at school? Put some time in your calendar for these activities. How are you as the parent getting ready for school?
