UPDATE! October is another “No Spending Month”

The results are in

October was the second time that I’ve entered a “no spending month” in 2017. Knowing what would await me, I thought I was much better prepared. In a way, that’s also true. But this time, there were also some new developments which left me grateful and satisfied!

Pre-select some fun activities

Several activities were already planned for October before the month even began: Enjoying Oktoberfest, learning the latest trends at a psychology conference and being scared watching the play Dracula. In addition, numerous work activities had been scheduled in advance.

Pre-selecting and devoting my time to specific events made me more mindful. This process made me realise which activities were important to me and which ones I really wanted to attend. These events also gave me something to look forward to and helped me overcome the lows of this month. The moments when I just wanted to have an ice cream or eat out rather than cooking myself.

Having something to look forward to allowed me to establish a balanced approach spending money. And spending money on quality activities instead of a short-term fix. This became also one of the unexpected results (see more below).

The expected results

From February, I knew how little time we spend at friends’ houses. The local culture is definitely more focused on going out and enjoying the time with friends in coffee shops or restaurants.

This month, I invited some girl-friends for a relaxed and fun evening. It was nothing special, just a bit of nibbles from the pantry and loads of laughter and chatting. It felt great having such a wonderful time at the comfort of my own home and best of all, for no money at all!

Prior the Oktoberfest and the theatre play, I met a friend and we caught up. It’s so amazing how much is happening despite being in contact via What’s App or Facebook. These one-to-one sessions were also so much fun. To be frank, I wondered why we’re not combining first meeting a friend and then going to another event together more often?

My expenditure was reduced substantially and during October, I’ve spent a total of AED 3,728 (USD 1,015) on groceries, transportation, utilities and phone bills. In addition, this included 2 networking dinners, a dinner with a friend from abroad, a lunch with my neighbour and the Oktoberfest as well as my hairdresser.

The desired effect of saving some money was certainly achieved, although, I bet I could have a stricter approach and save more.15 activities to do during a no spending month

The unexpected results

Another goal of the “no spending month” was to use what’s available at home. I did not expect it to have a positive impact on my waistline, too. Having been more conscious about eating out, I controlled my food intake a lot more and probably cooked way healthier meals. Losing some pounds was a welcomed side effect for sure!

Not being as rigid as in February, I allowed more activities which cost a small fee. However, there was also a shift in my activities. The weather now allows more outdoor activities and I started walked again. It’s lovely to be more active (for free), spending less time vegging on the couch!

There was also another mindset shift. While waiting for the car to be cleaned (yes, it’s essential in this sandy region!), I did not have the urge to get a coffee from the little coffee shop. Instead, I was more than happy to get freshly brewed coffee at home!

For me, having a “no spending month” will become a regular activity. I loved focusing on my commitment, being more conscious about what I chose and with whom I wanted to spend my time. Saving some money and using up what’s already in the pantry are fantastic benefits!

What was your “no spending month” like? Did you enjoy it as much as I did? Will you join me for another “no spending month” next year? I can’t wait to hear about your experience! Just leave a comment.

Until next time,
Agni
